Rinnai Infinity Hot Water: Is It Worth It?

The Rinnai Infinity is one of the most popular continuous flow hot water systems in New Zealand. We install a lot of them. Here is our honest take on whether it is worth the investment.

What Is the Rinnai Infinity?

The Rinnai Infinity is a gas-powered continuous flow (tankless) hot water system. Instead of storing hot water in a tank, it heats water on demand as it flows through the unit. Turn on a hot tap, the unit fires up. Turn it off, it stops. Simple.

The most popular model for residential use in NZ is the Rinnai Infinity A26, which delivers up to 26 litres per minute — enough for two showers running at the same time.

What We Like About It

Unlimited Hot Water - This is the big selling point and it delivers. You genuinely cannot run out of hot water. Long showers, back-to-back baths, filling the spa — it just keeps going. For families, this alone makes it worth considering.

Energy Efficiency - Because it only heats water when you use it, there is no standby energy loss. With a traditional cylinder, you are paying to keep 180 litres of water hot 24/7 whether you use it or not. The Infinity eliminates that waste.

Space Saving - The unit mounts on an exterior wall. No more bulky cylinder taking up a cupboard inside your home. We have had customers convert their old cylinder cupboard into storage or even a small pantry.

Long Lifespan - With regular servicing, a Rinnai Infinity typically lasts 20 or more years. That is longer than most storage cylinders.

Reliable Brand - Rinnai is a well-established brand in New Zealand with good parts availability and warranty support. The Infinity A26 comes with a 10-year heat exchanger warranty.

What to Be Aware Of

Higher Upfront Cost - A Rinnai Infinity installation typically costs $3,500 to $5,500 including the unit, gas work, plumbing, electrical, and compliance certificate. That is more than a basic electric cylinder replacement.

Needs Gas - You need a natural gas connection or LPG supply. If you do not have gas, adding a connection is an extra cost. Not every property can easily get gas.

Flow Rate Limits - While 26 litres per minute sounds like a lot, running three or four outlets simultaneously can stretch it. In practice, most households find it handles normal use without issues.

Annual Servicing - Rinnai recommends annual servicing to maintain the warranty and keep it running efficiently. Budget around $150 to $250 per service.

Who Is It Best For?

  • Families who run out of hot water regularly

  • Homes with existing gas connections

  • Anyone wanting to reduce energy bills long-term

  • Homeowners who want to free up internal space

  • Properties where a traditional cylinder is hard to access or replace

Who Should Consider Something Else?

  • Tight budget — a basic electric cylinder is cheaper upfront

  • No gas supply and adding one is impractical

  • Very low hot water usage — the savings may not justify the cost

Our Verdict

We install Rinnai Infinity systems regularly and the feedback from customers is consistently positive. It is a quality product that does what it promises. The higher upfront cost pays for itself over time through lower running costs and a longer lifespan.

Is it worth it? For most Auckland homes with gas, yes.
