What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Home

The smell of gas in your home is something you should never ignore. Natural gas and LPG are both odourised so you can detect leaks — that distinctive rotten egg smell is there for your safety. Here is exactly what to do if you smell gas.

Step 1: Do Not Create Any Sparks

This is the most important thing. Do NOT:

  • Turn any light switches on or off

  • Use any electrical appliances

  • Use your phone inside the house

  • Light matches, lighters, or candles

  • Start your car if it is in an attached garage

Any spark can ignite leaked gas. Even flipping a light switch can be enough.

Step 2: Ventilate

Open doors and windows to let fresh air in and gas out. Do not use extractor fans or any electrical ventilation — just open things manually.

Step 3: Turn Off the Gas Supply

If you can safely access your gas meter or LPG bottle, turn it off. The valve is usually a lever or tap on the meter — turn it to the off position (perpendicular to the pipe).

Step 4: Get Everyone Out

Evacuate everyone from the house including pets. Move well away from the property.

Step 5: Call for Help

Once you are safely outside and away from the building:

  • For natural gas leaks: Call the gas emergency line on 0800 GAS 888 (0800 427 888)

  • If you feel unsafe or the leak is severe: Call 111

  • For a gasfitter to locate and repair the leak: Call Water and Gas Worx on 0800 322 322

Common Causes of Gas Leaks

  • Faulty or old gas appliances — cooktops, heaters, hot water systems

  • Damaged gas pipes — corrosion, accidental damage during renovations

  • Poor connections — improperly fitted appliances or fittings

  • LPG regulator issues — worn seals or faulty regulators on gas bottles

How to Prevent Gas Leaks

  • Regular servicing: Have your gas appliances serviced by a qualified gasfitter every 2 years

  • Gas compliance certificates: Ensure all gas work is done by a certified gasfitter and comes with a certificate of compliance

  • Know your system: Learn where your gas meter or LPG shutoff is before you need it

  • Install a gas detector: Consider a gas alarm in your kitchen or near gas appliances
