5 Signs Your Hot Water Cylinder Needs Replacing

Learn the 5 warning signs it needs replacing and what your options are. Auckland plumber tips from Water & Gas Worx.

If you are an Auckland homeowner, your hot water cylinder is one of those things you never think about until it stops working. But like any appliance, it has a lifespan. Here are five warning signs that it might be time for a replacement.

1. You Are Running Out of Hot Water Faster Than Usual If your morning showers are turning cold quicker than they used to, your cylinder may be losing its ability to heat and hold water efficiently. Sediment builds up inside the tank over time, reducing its effective capacity and making it work harder. What to do: If your household has not grown but your hot water is disappearing faster, it is worth getting the cylinder inspected.

2. Rusty or Discoloured Water Brown or rusty water coming from your hot taps is a sign of internal corrosion. The anode rod inside your cylinder is designed to attract corrosive elements and protect the tank, but once it is spent, the tank itself starts to deteriorate. What to do: If the discolouration is only from hot taps (not cold), the cylinder is likely the source. A plumber can confirm whether the tank is salvageable or needs replacing.

3. Leaking Around the Base A puddle of water around the base of your cylinder is a red flag. Small leaks can quickly become big problems, causing water damage to your home. Leaks usually mean the tank has corroded through and cannot be repaired. What to do: Turn off the power to the cylinder and call a plumber. Do not ignore it — water damage costs far more than a new cylinder.

4. Your Cylinder Is Over 15 Years Old Most hot water cylinders in New Zealand last between 15 and 20 years, depending on the model, water quality, and maintenance. If yours is approaching or past that age, it is running on borrowed time. What to do: Check the manufacture date on your cylinder (usually on a sticker or plate on the unit). If it is over 15 years old, start planning for a replacement rather than waiting for it to fail at the worst possible time.

5. Your Power Bills Are Climbing An old or failing cylinder loses efficiency. It takes longer to heat water and loses more heat through the tank walls, especially if insulation has degraded. You end up paying more to get less. What to do: If your power bills have crept up without an obvious reason, your hot water cylinder could be the culprit. A new, well-insulated cylinder or a continuous flow system can significantly reduce your energy costs.

What Are Your Replacement Options? When it is time to replace, you have three main choices: Storage cylinder — The traditional option. Electric or gas, available in various sizes. Reliable and cost-effective. Continuous flow (instant) hot water — Gas-powered units like the Rinnai Infinity heat water on demand. No tank, no running out. Great for smaller homes or anyone sick of cold showers. Heat pump hot water — The energy-efficient choice. Higher upfront cost but lower running costs long-term.
